A 'butterhead' variety with soft round, medium sized hearts for sowing and harvesting throughout the spring and summer. The outer leaves and heart of Lettuce Quattro Stagioni show an attractive bronzed-red colour.
Lettuce is very suitable for inter-cropping between taller, long-standing vegetables, such as beans, tomatoes, peppers, etc. Lettuces require rich, moisture retentive soil free of weeds.
Make sowings in succession during February and March under protection, or March to August outdoors. Sow seeds thinly in rows, 13mm deep, allowing 30cm between rows. Thin to about 25cm between plants. Can also be sown all year round thickly under glass for 'salad leaves'.
Keep well watered. During warmer months cutting can commence after about 70 days.
The dark green leaves of lettuce are a good source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A.
Serving suggestion - Lettuce leaves in citrus vinaigrette. Wash, dry and tear a choice of mixed salad leaves including lettuce. Blend a vinaigrette of orange and lime juices, olive oil, coarse salt. Toss salad leaves in the vanaigrette just prior to serving.
