Lettuce : Lattuga Red Salad Bowl

Salad Vegetable

  • Crops in : May to October
  • Ideal for : Children

Description

Lattuga Red Salad Bowl forms a voluminous head of reddish-bronzed leaves. Non-hearting, just pick young leaves as required or cut the full head, wash and keep in the refrigerator.

Lettuce is very suitable for inter-cropping between taller, long-standing vegetables, such as beans, tomatoes, peppers, etc. Lettuces require rich, moisture retentive soil free of weeds.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds in succession during February and March under protection, or March to August outdoors. Sow seeds thinly in rows, 13mm deep, allowing 30cm between rows. Thin to about 30cm between plants. Alternatively thin to about 10cm apart for 'salad leaves' and pick regularly. Can also be sown all year round thickly under glass for 'salad leaves'.

Growing Instructions

Keep well watered. During warmer months cutting can commence after about 70 days.

Aftercare

The whole plant can be lifted complete with roots, soil washed from the roots, which will keep the leaves fresh for a longer time.

Nutritional Information

The dark green leaves of lettuce are a good source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A.

Kitchen Notes

Serving suggestion - Lettuce soup. Wash and steam chopped lettuce, endive, chervil, radicchio leaves, add diced carrot and onion, stock and water and allow to simmer. Toast sliced Italian bread, place in a bowl and pour soup over the bread. Top with parmesan.
