Early ripening and prolific cropping, Cetriolo Piccolo Di Parigi produces short, firm fleshed, spiny skinned gherkins. Ideal whole or sliced for pickling.
For early crops sow seeds under protection in pots of compost, 20mm deep, in March to April. Plant outdoors in late May or when frost risk has passed, 80cm apart each way. Seed can be sown direct in the open ground from May to June by placing 2 seeds per station, 20mm deep, and 80cm apart. Keep soil moist.Thin to strongest seedling.
Protection with polythene or fleece may be necessary during cold weather.
Cut fruits regularly to encourage long continuous production. Cut before fruits show signs of producing seeds, best done early morning when it is fresh and cool.
Cucumbers are 96% water, low in calories but high in potassium. Avoid peeling as the dark green skin is rich in carotenoid antioxidants.
Add slices of pickled fruit to salads, antipasti, cold meat and cheese platters.
