Highly desirable and dramatic plants with large, lush green foliage from which rise strong, erect stems bearing pineapple-like heads with clusters of small starry flowers, some of which are bicoloured. T&M have selected some of the most impressive hybrids for container and border use.
Sow in pots or trays of good seed compost. Place in a propagator or warm place, providing a temperature of about 15-20C (59-68F). Cover with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Sow January to April. After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged, germination will usually take 21-30 days.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost. Provide a rich, well-drained soil in full sun, spacing plants by 30cm (12in).
