Spinacia oleracea. Dark green, semi-savoy-leaved variety producing plenty of 'baby leaves'. Spinach Picasso is slow to bolt (run to seed). Perfect in containers. Can be grown all year indoors for 'baby leaves'.
Sow seeds from March to August. Sow seeds thinly direct outside or in containers, 13mm (½in) deep. Prolong the cropping season by sowing thinly in containers or windowboxes at regular intervals.
Thin as necessary to 25-50mm (1-2in) apart.
Keep well watered during dry weather.
You can eat no better vegetable than spinach as it is rich in Vitamins A and C, beta-carotene, lutein (which helps protect against eye disease) and dietary fibre.
