Beta vulgaris var.conditiva. Easy to grow, Beet Cardeal produces golf ball sized, succulent baby beets with very sweet, smooth skinned rich red fleshed roots.
Sow seeds March to July. Sow seeds thinly direct outside or in containers, 13mm (½in) deep.
Thin as necessary to 25mm (1in) apart or to 50mm (2in) for larger roots.
Keep well watered during dry weather.
Leaves and stems also delicious raw, wilted in stir-fries or as a steamed vegetable. Try eating the young leaves in salads as a salad leaf.
