Description

With its bright orange, bell-shaped flowers which cover the plant from late spring throughout the summer, Begonia Boliviensis is a delightful, easy-to-grow begonia that is perfect in containers, hanging baskets and as a landscape plant. Of special historical interest to gardeners, begonia boliviensis was introduced to Europe in 1864 and is one of the species used to produce the first hybrid tuberous begonia in England.

Height: 45-60cm (18-24in) with a similar spread and trailing length.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds from Mid January to Mid March. Sow seeds on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Do not cover the seed. Place in a propagator or seal container in a polythene bag and put in warm place, and keep at a temperature of around 24-27C (75-80F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 15-60 days. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays.

Caution: Dust-like seeds. To open, hold over a sheet of white paper, cut along three sides of inner pack and carefully open out flat. Tap the packet gently to dislodge seed.

Growing Instructions

Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost into baskets or containers.

Aftercare

For best results, provide a rich, light, well-drained compost in full sun or part shade.
