Sow seeds thinly from spring to mid summer at two week intervals 6mm (žin) deep, in drills 30cm (12in) apart. A moist, well drained, fertile soil which has had plenty of compost dug in the previous autumn is best. In very hot weather it is best to water the soil before sowing and sow during the early afternoon. An early spring sowing under cloches will provide a really early crop.
Thin out gradually to 25-30cm (10-12in) apart.
You will find that young heads have a far sweeter flavour than fully mature ones and you will soon find the best time for harvesting to give optimum flavour.
The dark green leaves of lettuce are a good source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A.
