Description

This magnificent strain, with fully double flowers of rich apricot on tall imposing spikes of blooms, gives an air of stately splendour. One of the finest background plants for the border and is equally effective when grown in small groups. Usually flowers in its second year. Flowers mid to late summer. Height 1.5-2m (5-6ft).

Sowing Instructions

Sow on the surface of a good seed compost in late spring/early summer. Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 12-21 days at 15-21C (65-75F). Do not exclude light which is beneficial to germination.

They can also be sown in mid summer in shallow drills, overwintered in a coldframe and planted out in spring 60cm (24in) apart. This produces larger plants and is recommended if the soil is heavy or badly drained.

Growing Instructions

Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Plant out 38cm (15in) apart in well cultivated garden soil and some shelter.

Kitchen Notes

Add a cupful of petals to salads, or pick the unopened flower buds, boil for three minutes and add to salads.
