Five reasons you should try these
By Gail Tasker 24-02-2012
OK so I must start by saying that I am only reviewing the acorn squash type from this mix as I was trying out a number of new varieties last year & didn't plant the whole packet. As stated these are bushy plants so ideal if you don't have a huge amount of space. The squash were a beautiful dark glossy green with the lovely acorn shape. Worth growing just for the beauty of the fruits. They keep fabulously well, one I harvested in september I finally used in February. It was still in perfect condition. I was amazed at how thin the skin was, so little to remove, and the seed cavity was also not too big so one of these, weighing in around 650g, gives a good amount of usable medium orange flesh. Lastly the flavour, WOW. The website suggests ways to cook these but they fail to say how delicious it is raw. Forget the watery insipid flesh of your carving pumpkin. The texture and taste is similar to a nutty swede, or dare I say it, slightly reminiscent of toffee apple. Shared it around at a party and everyone was impressed and surprised. I can't comment much on the yield because I live in Norway and we had a bad year 2011, but the fact that this performed when many other things failed is good enough for me. I am hoping that there are still seeds for this one in the mix and that the other types are as good. If T&M sold these acorn squash seeds as a single named variety I would be buying them. 5 stars, probably deserves more.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds 13mm (½in) deep in 7cm (3in) pots of a good, free-draining, moist seed compost, at 20-25C (68-77F). Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag until after germination which takes 7-10 days. Seeds can also be sown direct outdoors once the soil has warmed. Sow two seeds every 90cm (36in) and later thin to the strongest seedling.

Growing Instructions

Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a few days before planting out after all risk of frost, 90cm (36in) apart.

Nutritional Information

Good source of vitamins B1 and E. High in antioxidants.

Kitchen Notes

As versatile as a potato - fruits can be stuffed, steamed, mashed, baked, roasted or microwaved. Flesh is also sweet enough to eat raw.
