A fun variety, Sweetcorn Red Strawberry has tiny, red, jewel-like kernels, on compact, strawberry-shaped ears only 5cm (2in) long, 3-4 cobs per plant. To pop, simply place the entire cob in the microwave and watch it explode with ready to eat fluffy, white popped corn, or use as a colourful part of your autumn decorations.

Superb Seedlings
By Claire Leivers 03-06-2011
I purchased some of these seeds after watching Claire from the Horticulture Channel sowing some and then showing us all how she went from seed to table! I only have a small yard, so I only sowed 6 seeds with a plan that maybe 4 will germinate and I will box plant, but all 6 germinated and I have 6 very strong healthy plants that I recently took my windowsill too the cold frame. I am really looking forward to harvest time and being to make our own popcorn!
Start seeds directly outdoors after all danger of frost when the soil has thoroughly warmed. Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep, 10-15cm (4-6in) apart, in rows 75cm (30in) apart. Germination takes from 5-10 days at 20-24C (70-75F).
Plant seedlings to stand 9-12in apart. Plant in blocks of at least 4 rows for proper pollination, and do not plant near sweet corn varieties to prevent cross pollination.
Harvest when the entire plant has become brown and dry, or harvest the 12-18cm (5-7in) ears earlier when the husk starts to torn brown, and allow to complete the drying process in a dry, well-ventilated area. Remove the corn from the cob by twisting your hands in opposite directions along the cob over a bowl. For added fun, pop the corn directly on the small cobs, inside a paper bag in the microwave for about 4-5 minutes on a high setting. Also great in autumn arrangements and decorations.
A typical sweetcorn cob contains less than 100 calories. Cobs are gluten-free and are a good source of fibre and Vitamin B.
