Reliable garden perennial with deeply lobed green leaves and spikes of large pink bicoloured petals on long flower spikes. Just as lovely in a border as in a vase.
Sow February to June. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 13-15ºC (55-60ºF). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 14-30 days.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out 45-60cm (18-24in) apart.
In cold winter areas, over-winter small young plants in a frost free place and plant them out the following spring to flower that summer.
