This heirloom lettuce is unusually spotted with a tasty flavour. Lettuce Freckles is an interesting Latin, semi-cos variety that holds well in warm weather and is slow to bolt. Lettuce Freckles is attractive in the kitchen garden or the flower border.
Sow seeds April to July outdoors, thinly, 6mm (žin) deep in ground which has been raked to a fine tilth. Space rows by 15cm (6in).
Thin out seedlings when large enough to handle, to 30cm (12in) apart. Keep cool and moist to prevent running to seed.
Prefers well drained, moist, rich, cool conditions. Harvest June to early October.
The dark green leaves of lettuce are a good source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A.
SERVING SUGGESTION With such unusual colouring and markings, Freckles is excellent for adding excitement to summer salads.
