T&M have been assessing extensive trials of early maturing varieties and believe that Brussels Sprout Nelson is the best 'Peer Gynt' replacement. Brussels Sprout Nelson produces smaller, more even sized buttons of a darker green colour and a sweeter taste.
Plants have good vigour, and a strong root system so they remain upright for easy picking.
Sow seeds mid February for August picking or March to April for picking September onwards.
Sow seeds into individual pots or a seed tray of a proprietary compost and cover with 6mm (¼in) of compost or vermiculite, at a minimum of 15C (60F), until germination which takes around 7 days. Alternatively, seeds can be sown thinly in a prepared seedbed 13mm (½in) deep, allowing 30cm (12in) between rows.
Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into larger pots, or transplant from the seedbed around 5 weeks from sowing, allowing 60-90cm (24-36in) each way. Plant firmly to obtain best quality sprout buttons.
Brussels Sprouts are a good source of Vitamin C and high in antioxidants.
