A superb quality, pale green butterhead of excellent flavour, with well-filled voluminous hearts. Lettuce Cassandra is resistant to most races of downy mildew and Lettuce Mosaic Virus. Ideal for growing all year round, especially summer and autumn outdoors.
Sow seeds April to July, at 2 week intervals. Sow seeds thinly, 13mm (½in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart in well-drained, fertile soil, which has been raked to a fine tilth. Water ground regularly, especially in dry periods.
Thin out seedlings at an early stage, to 23-30cm (9-12in) apart. Keep cool and moist to prevent running to seed.
The dark green leaves of lettuce are a good source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A.
