Invaluable long-lived border plants in numerous shades of pink, orange and scarlet with distinctive, contrasting stripe. One of the worlds' most popular cut flowers.
Sow ¼ inch (6 mm) deep, Feb to July, in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 70-75F (20-25C). After sowing, seal the seed tray, pot etc. in a polythene bag and keep at 70F (20C) for 3 weeks, then place in a refrigerator at 5C (40F) for 3 weeks. After this place in warmth 70F (20C). Germination then takes 14-30 days.
Transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots when large enough to handle, taking care not to damage the roots. Acclimatise young plants to outdoor conditions before planting out in full sun 30cm (12in) apart.
Prefers a rich, light, well drained soil. Choose a sheltered position where they won)t be disturbed for several years.
