An impressive variety which produces large domed heads, with a consistent weight of 340g (12oz) with medium heads during the late summer-autumn period. Broccoli Fiesta F1 has numerous secondary side shoots that are produced once the centre head is harvested. Also has an outstanding tolerance to heat. Ideal for freezing.
Sow seeds mid May to June. Sow seeds thinly in a prepared seedbed 1-2cm (˝ to žin) deep. Keep well watered and cover with fine netting to deter birds and cabbage caterpillar attack.
Transplant when large enough to handle into well prepared, firm soil allowing 45x38cm (18x15in) between plants. Plant firmly with lower leaves just above soil level. Water regularly during dry weather to minimise heads running to flower. Once the central head has been cut, further smaller side shoots develop.
Prefers a rich, moist, well drained soil. Long cropping period. Harvest August to October.
Calabrese and Broccoli contain many healthy antioxidants. They are high in Vitamin A and C and are a good source of iron.
For the best flavour, steam broccoli within hours of harvesting.
