A Peruvian fruit suitable for frost-free areas or conservatory growing. The succulent, sweet fruits of Cyphomandra betacea are produced on mature plants during late summer. Remove the skin and slice raw in salads or soak in honey for a refreshing breakfast!
Sow seeds March to April on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover seed with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 21-30 days.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3 inch) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise young plants to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 2m (6 feet) apart. For best results, grow in containers of soil-based potting mix in the greenhouse or conservatory.
Feed with balanced liquid fertiliser every 3 weeks, and water sparingly during winter. Top dress or pot on in spring . For growing outdoors in warmer regions, provide a fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun part shade.
