Sweetcorn Conquest is reliable and early with cobs of outstanding flavour and quality.
Sow seeds April to May. Sow seeds in pots of moist seed compost and cover with a 1cm (½in) layer of compost. Place in a propagator or warm place, and keep at a constant temperature of between 20-25C (68-77F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Germination will usually take 6-10 days.
After all risk of frost, plant in blocks, spacing individual plants 45cm (18in) apart. Provide a sunny sheltered spot on rich, well drained soil, raked to a fine tilth.
Once cobs begin to form, water regularly. Cobs are ripe when the liquid is thin and creamy.
A typical sweetcorn cob contains less than 100 calories. Cobs are gluten-free and are a good source of fibre and Vitamin B.
