A British bred medium sized red cos type with a shiny burgundy leaf, Lettuce Nymans retainis its colour halfway into the heart, contrasting with a bright green base. Lettuce Nymans is ideal used as 'baby leaf' or as a mature heart, which is slow to bolt and has good mildew resistance.
Sow seeds March to August. Sow seeds thinly 13mm (½in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart in soil which has been raked to a fine tilth.
When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 30cm (12in) apart.
Harvest a few leaves from each plant, or if for full hearts when they feel firm when gently pressed. Keep well watered during spells of dry weather.
The dark green leaves of lettuce are a good source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A.
