I grow curly kale every year and is a great welcome to the dinner plate in winter.
Sow seeds outdoors in a seed bed in Spring in drills 6mm (žin) deep and 30cm (12in) apart.
Thin out to 23cm (9in) apart and transplant to final quarters in mid-Summer, spacing them 60cm (24in) apart.
Pick the leaves regularly from January to April, pinching out the centre stem first to encourage side shoots.
Kale is a very good source of Vitamins A, C, K and folate and provides 50% of the daily requirement in a single 80gms (2.82oz) portion.
