Description

Early to crop with prolific sets of huge jet-black fruit up to 680g (1½lb). Just three plants will keep a family of four with aubergines from mid summer to late autumn. Aubergine Black Enorma is ideal for garden, patio or greenhouse. Stake plants and pick fruit regularly.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds February to May for growing indoors or March-April for growing outdoors.

Sow seeds on the surface of a good free draining, moist seed compost and cover with 6mm (¼in) layer of vermiculite or compost. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag at constant 18-21C (65-70F) until after germination which takes 10-14 days.

Growing Instructions

Transplant seedlings carefully while quite small into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grow on on steadily in a slightly reduced temperature. Harden off and plant out when all risk of frost is gone and the soil is warm. Pot on finally into a larger container or 2 plants per growbag, or outdoors 90cm (3ft) apart in rows 90-120cm (3-4ft) apart once plants have been acclimatised to conditions and after all risk of frost has passed.

Aftercare

Stake as you would for tomatoes and water regularly. It is not necessary to pinch out growth or sideshoot. Black plastic mulch is useful helping to warm the soil, keep down weeds and save moisture. Once first flowers have set, feed and water regularly with a high potash tomato feed. Harvest regularly to promote further flowers and to extend the picking season.

Nutritional Information

Aubergines are a good source of viscous fibre which has been shown to reduce the absorption of cholesterol. They contain Vitamins E & K and are high in potassium, folate and magnesium.
