Stunning plant
By Judith Thursby 10-10-2010
I grew these last year (2009) when the seed packet was at a trial price. Having a very small garden front and back, my plants ended up in containers - and, for the most part, more closely planted together than recommended. When people walked past my tiny front garden, the majority of them commented on the wonderful, prolific flowers of Marigold 'Citrus Mixed' and seemed surprised that French marigolds grew this tall. They were a huge success, so I'm getting some more seeds for this year - and the surplus ones (as you always have to sow more than you need in case some don't come up or they are too weedy and need to be pulled out) will be sold in aid of a charity I support when I hold a sale in late spring/early summer.
Sow March to May on the surface of good, free-draining, seed sowing compost. Cover seeds with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite or seed sowing compost. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag and place at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) until after germination which usually takes 7-21 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination.
Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 37-45cm (15-18in) apart.
Prefers any well-drained soil in full sun.
