Forms a clump of slender elongated bulbs and long green stalks, similar to chives. A type of perennial bunching onion usually grown as an annual, and winter hardy. Quite pungent flavoured, use both the leaves and small bulbs.
Sow March to April. Sow seed thinly, 1cm (½in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart.
Thin to 15cm (6in) between plants which will grow to form a clump.
Keep watered during dry periods.
Use as a substitute for chives, chopped up in salads, stir-fries, added to soups and egg dishes.
