  • Crops in : July to October
  • Height : 15 inches - 18 inches

Description

Multipurpose variety with a compact plant habit and healthy foliage. Pale green, early-setting pods can be picked as normal French beans, but are best picked either as flageolets (when the pods contain soft, immature seeds) or as mature pods when the bigger white seeds can be shelled as haricots. A white seeded variety producing huge yields.

Sowing Instructions

Sow mid April indoors in pots or May to July outdoors. For indoor sowing, sow seeds individually in 7-5cm (3in) pots at 18-21C (65-70F) from mid April for transplanting outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively sow direct outdoors in warm soil, although germination can be erratic in cold, wet soils, from May to late July. Sow 2 or 3 seeds 5cm (2in) deep, allowing 20cm (8in) between each group of seeds and 45cm (18in) between rows with no need to thin out.

Growing Instructions

Use cloches to aid establishment of earliest sowings. Hoe regularly and keep well watered and mulched during dry periods. Harvest regularly whilst young for highest yields and to extend the season. Pick earliest pods for fresh use but most pods are best used as flageolets or as fully mature shelled beans as haricots.

Nutritional Information

A good source of vitamins A and C.

Kitchen Notes

Most suited for dishes requiring flageolets (soft immature seeds) or as haricots (fully mature shelled seeds) boiled or baked and used in soups, casseroles and salads.
