A classic heritage variety producing long, quite broad shouldered, tapering roots with smooth skin and creamy flesh of mild, pleasant flavour. The roots have only a small central core. Good resistance to canker.
Sow April to May, earlier sowings from mid February risk poor germination. Sow seed thinly, 1cm (½in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart. Sow clusters of 3 or 4 seeds every 20cm (8in) and thin out to the strongest seedling after germination. Germination can sometimes be very slow.
Serve with chopped walnuts and a dash of sweet sherry.
