Help to retain bio diversity by growing these traditional varieties with the taste and garden performance well regarded by previous generations.
Sow March to July at 4 week intervals. Sow seed thinly in well-prepared seedbed, 1cm (½in) deep in drills 23cm (9in) apart.
Plant out to 30cm (12in) apart each way when large enough to handle, about 5 weeks from sowing.
Water regularly, especially in dry periods. Hoe between plants as required.
Be creative, shredding the tender hearts for salads and stir-fries.
