Dichondra argentea 'Silver Falls'
By Lisa Coy 08-08-2011
I tried this plant for the first time in my garden this year. The seeds germinated well and although the plants seemed to grow slowly through spring, despite the warm weather, they've really made up for it now. I have planted them on their own in hanging baskets, like the picture, and they look just like that! They have absolutely beautiful long, silvery foliage and I will certainly be using this plant again next year as it fits with so many colour schemes.
Sow January to April on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Lightly cover the seed with a sprinkle of fine grade vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 21-23C (70-75F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; until germination which usually takes 5-10 days. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays.
Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost 15-30cm (6-12in) apart or in baskets or containers.
For the best results, plant in a good well-drained soil or compost and grow on in full sun or part shade.
