Probably one of the best species with silver lanceolate foliage and stems. The flower spikes contain many small white flowers, gently veined in mauve. A choice perennial from Spain, and an unusual cut flower too. Height: 60-120cm (3-4ft).
Sow from February to July on the surface of a good seed compost. Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal inside a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 30-90 days at 13-18C (55-65F). To speed this up, after 30 days place in a fridge, still in its polythene bag and leave at 3-5C for 2-3 weeks, then return to the warmth. Inspect regularly while in the fridge and remove immediately if they start to germinate.
Transplant when large enough to handle into7.5cm (3in) pots. Later, plant out 30cm (12in) apart.
Prefers moist but well drained soil in sun.
