Of all garden Potentillas, this must surely be one of the most attractive. Heart-shaped, rich raspberry red petals forming saucer-shaped flowers; a wonderful colour in its own right - but add a deep velvet red centre, appearing just like an ink blot which has diffused outwards and the flowers radiate beauty; a real garden treasure. Flowering over a long period, an absolute must for the perennial border and cottage garden alike. Flowers summer. Height: 60-90cm (24-36in).
Sow in good seed compost from late winter to mid summer, just covering the seed with compost. Sealing the container inside a polythene bag after sowing is beneficial. Germination takes 14-30 days at 18-20C (65-70F).
Seed sown early will often produce flowers the same season.
When large enough to handle transplant seedlings to boxes or 7.5cm (3in) pots. When well grown gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out 38cm (15in) apart in full sun and well drained soil.
