An extremely neat version of this popular half hardy annual, making it ideal as an edging to pathway or lawn. It grows well even in an adverse summer with the mounded plants smothered in blooms from the end of June onwards. Flowers early summer to first frosts. Height 23cm (9in).

A Gem Indeed

Easy to grow from seed, high success rate. These little plants make great fillers at the front of beds or in pots, giving a mass of blooms in a vivid colour, brightening up rainy summer days. They've gone onto my "grow every year" list.
Sow in spring at 21-24C (70-75F) in a good seed compost. Just cover the seed with compost and keep the soil damp but not wet. Germination usually takes 5-14 days.
They can also be sown out of doors 6mm (žin) deep in well raked soil in late spring.
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost 23-30cm (9-12in) apart in a sunny spot.
The flowers and leaves taste of orange or lemon. Use in sandwiches, salads, seafood chowders and hot desserts.
