Good partners for the Giant Cactus dahlias
By Peter Humphrey 15-08-2011
These seeds have been as big a success as the Giant Cactus Dahlias. In fact here we are in August and I have one or two big surprises. These were 100% germination and fast growers, thankfully May was warm and frost free so I managed to plant these out earlier than usual. The garden has been a really colourful bonanza this year . I have just discovered a lovely purple dahlia from this batch six foot tall.I kid you not. I am 6' 4" tall and we look each other in the eye. I hope these seeds will be available next year.
Sow in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 65-70F (18-20C). Sowing Depth: 1/16in (1.5mm). Sowing Time: February-March. Germination usually takes 7-21 days.
Transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots when large enough to handle, taking care NOT to damage the roots. Harden off and plant out when all risk of frost has passed 30cm (12in) apart in full sun. Prefers a moist, well drained soil.
