Bean : Runner Bean : Desiree

In recent years we have introduced and developed vegetables that have achieved real steps forward in yield, flavour, space saving, disease tolerance; etc. This bean fits into this category and is outstanding in every way.

Almost foolproof, it attains huge crops from a small area. Long, broad, completely stringless, very fleshy 25-30cm (10-12in) pods. Very heavy cropping, often averages 40 pods per plant. As it is a shy seeder there is more juicy fleshy edible area, which accounts for the exceptional flavour. Compared with other runner beans it is much more productive under dry weather conditions. White flowered.

A major breakthrough in British runner bean breeding. This profusely white-flowering variety combines the valuable characteristics of French beans with those of runner beans. A very early cropper producing lots of pods and very little foliage, resulting in a tremendous crop of succulentm 15-20cm (6-8in) pods. Runner Bean Red Rum is excellent for organic gardeners as this variety is Halo Blight tolerant. This means it will keep on cropping whilst other varieties are going down with this disease. British breeding at its best. Unique rose pink flowers. Runner Bean Riley is bred for straight, fleshy, uniform 25cm (10in) long pods, which are stringless when young. Producing a very heavy yield over a long period. Interestingly, although pods are picked and eaten before seed development, the seed colour of Runner Bean Riley goes from pale red to blue to almost black.

RHS AGM Winner, producing the heaviest yield of quality pods at the most recent Wisley Runner Bean trial. British bred bicoloured red and white flower, much earlier, heavier cropping with superior quality, smoother, fleshy, pale green 25-30cm pods when compared to 'Painted Lady'. The straight pods of Runner Bean St George have good 'snap' with little string or fibre if picked regularly whilst young.

Runner Bean Wisley Magic has attractive bright red flowers produce long smooth, slender pods, easily reaching 35cm (14in) long. Although not stringless, Wisley Magic has a low fibre content and a superior flavour - that 'old fashioned' runner bean taste. Seeds are in the RHS Vegetable Collection.
