Sow Portulaca seed from February to March on the surface of a good seed compost, and gently firm down. Do not cover the seed. Place in a propagator at a temperature of 18-21C (64-70F) or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 7- 14 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow on in cooler conditions. When Portulaca plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting outdoors. Grow Portulaca in full sun on any light, well drained soil, spaced at a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

CAUTION: Begonia seeds are dust-like. To open packet, hold over a sheet of white paper, cut along three sides of the inner pack and carefully open out flat. Tap the packet gently to dislodge the seed.

Feed and water Portulaca plants until fully established. Once established they require little attention and cope well on dry soils.
