Sow February to April. Sow each seed onto the surface of individual 7.5cm (3in) pots or cell trays filled with a very free-draining, damp, seed compost. Cover the seeds with a sprinkling of vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and place at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) until after germination which usually takes 7-14 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination.

When small plants are large enough, pot on into 13cm (5in) pots or into containers to grow on. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, in borders 30-45cm (12-18in) apart or into large containers. Plants are deciduous, cut back old foliage in spring as new growth appears in the centres of plants.
